Susanna Pöykiö, the several-times Finnish Champion, and the runner-up of the 2005 Europeans, faced the worst setback of her career last season. Because of a bad back injury, Susanna had to abandon her attempt to qualify for the Finnish Figure Skating Team 2008 to Zagreb and Gothenburg. After a six-month recovery time, Susanna is now back in business. She is seriously looking forward to compete at the home Europeans 2009 in Helsinki.

- At the moment, I'm training in my home town Oulu. Unfortunately there is a shortage of on-ice hours because our training arena burned up last summer.

- In my training, I have been concentrating on the basics, and increased the load of physical training not forgetting the importance of recovery and rest.

For the coming season, Susanna decided to keep her old free programme but, instead, have a new short programme. The new choreography, to the tunes of a Russian piano melody, is composed by Susanna's coach and sister Heidi Pöykiö, and choreographer Outi Martikainen. Susanna's first test will be the 2008 Finlandia Trophy from 10-12 October in Tikkurila, Vantaa.

- I'm anxious to get back on ice again even if I'm also realistic about my possibilities after a relatively long break from competing.

- I hope that we skaters succeed in making our competion exciting for the fans, and in achieving our top level when really needed.

- I wish all figure skating friends warmly welcome to Helsinki to cheer all competitors up, and to enjoy the unique atmosphere in the arena.
